If you need to make a phone insurance claim, you’ll get billed either a $125 or $199 deductible, depending on which smartphone you have. More advanced smartphones, iPhones and 4G-capable Androids, are put into the $199 group.

Verizon is slightly different because there are three smartphone deductibles: $99, $169 or $199. Once again, the deductible depends on which smartphone you have. The monthly fee for Verizon’s phone insurance is $9.99 per month during the two-year agreement.
Phone insurance vs repair: Let’s do some math!

Let’s say you have the 32GB iPhone4S with either At&t or Verizon, and your front-screen and LCD were destroyed when you accidentally dropped your phone in the parking lot:

$9.99 policy x 24 months = $239.76 during your 2-year agreement + $199 deductible = $438.76 overall.

We charge $110 and you get to keep your phone with a brand new screen. You won’t receive a refurbished phone.
Phone insurance vs our repair: Best Buy mobile Black Tie

Best Buy’s Geek Squad offers a phone insurance program called Black Tie. The policy is $14.99 per month for an iPhone, and $9.99 per month for every other phone. Its covers a lot of stuff like damage from being dropped, mechanical failure, battery replacement, giving you a different but comparable phone if its is a lemon, and 24/7 technical support. You can also double your Reward Zone points if you never make a claim! However, it doesn’t cover water-damage, lost or stolen devices.

If we do that math here, the policy is only $239.76 or $359.76 per two-year agreement. But, if your smartphone gets water-damaged, you’ll have to buy a new one at retail cost or from a third-party “friend.”

We can repair a water-damaged phone for $150.
Phone insurance vs. repair: Repair saves money

We fix iPhone 4 and 4S’s for between $40 and $110, depending on what needs fixing. The cheapest fixes are replacing the back glass for $40 or the battery for $45 (keep in mind, if you depend on insurance you’d have to send your iPhone into Apple for a new battery). The most expensive fix is replacing the front screen and LCD for $110. Everything else – home button, charging port, volume and headphone jack, ear speaker and camera – fall between $80 and $95.

The most expensive phone for us to fix is the Samsung Infuse at $240 and the Samsung Droid Charge for $219. However, they’re still cheaper than paying $10 per month for two years on top of a $200 deductible.

As you can see, coming to us instead of mailing-in your smartphone will save you the most money. Like I mentioned at the beginning though, phone insurance is great if your smartphone gets lost or stolen. Otherwise, there are better solutions. And by that, I mean My Phone is Broken.
